Numerical root finder

Find a local numerical root from a starting estimate.

How to use this calculator

Edit FindRoot(residual,[(variable, start)]). The example finds the fixed point of cosine near 1.

Tap the math below to edit it and see the result. Once a result is ready, press Tab on a hardware keyboard to accept it. Outside a matrix, Return completes the line; the phone math keyboard has the same Return action.

Try it here

FindRoot⁡(cos⁡(x)−x,[(x,1)])\operatorname{FindRoot}\left(\cos(x)-x,[(x,1)]\right)

Interactive tools require JavaScript. You can read the guide and example without it.

What to know

Inspect the convergence and residual rows, not only the parameter value. A local search does not find every root, and a nonconverged result is not a successful solution.

Mathlean combines visual mathematical input with computation and canvas tools. Results depend on the expression and available engine support; check important answers independently.
